Interpower Enclosed Outdoor Outlets and Ingress—Protection

Interpower Outdoor Outlets conform to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60529 (Section 4.2) standards, and National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) 250 standards. An Ingress Protection (IP) rating is internationally recognized for “sealing” properties of electrical equipment from elements such as dust and water as well as larger objects such as tools.

Interpower offers both NEMA 12/4-rated enclosed outdoor sockets and IP 65-rated enclosed sockets. According to the NEMA table in the standards, the “12” in 12/4 indicates protection from dirt, dust, lint, fibers, and the splashing of water while the “4” designates indoor or outdoor enclosures are protected from dirt, dust, and splashing or hose-directed water. Each enclosed socket is for indoor or outdoor applications and include a hinged cover. See further explanation for both sets of ratings below.

Interpower NEMA 250 Ratings—an Expanded Definition of the “12/4” Rating

Type 12: Enclosures constructed (without knockouts) for indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and circulating dust, lint, fibers, and flyings); and to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (dripping and light splashing).

Type 4: Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt and windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.

What Does an IP 65 Rating Mean?

In looking at the IP classification chart, a “6” as the first digit means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected from the ingress of dust. A “5” as the second digit means it is protected from jetting water as seen in the table below.

Applications for IP 65 and NEMA 12/4 Rated Products

Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in industrial equipment and control panel applications can benefit from using IP 65 and NEMA 12/4 rated products, such as in convenience power sockets on control panels or in conjunction with power distribution devices in large electrical systems. Applications may include factory settings where water or fluids can frequently come into contact with enclosures, like equipment wash-down operations. Technicians and maintenance personnel may also utilize these kinds of sockets during preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, or upgrading of such systems.
